Los Angeles private eye Jake Gittes is hired by a woman pretending to be a Mrs. Mulwray to pry out her husband. Shortly after Gittes starts his job, Mrs. Mulwray who is indeed one comes to his office promising to sue if he doesn't stop his investigation right away. Gittes keeps on doing his job anyway, slowly unmasking a gross cabal around the water management, state and city corruption, land exploitation and real estate, and entailing at least one murder.
