Detective Chief Inspector Jane Tennison chases a serial rapist/murderer. Before Jane starts investigating the case, she already has a prime suspect. If he is guilty, can enough possible evidence be collected to accuse him? If he is innocent, who is the guilty one? Her job is difficult because of the evil manner of her colleagues towards a female boss. Actually, she has constant fights with Sergeant Bill Otley, whose hostility is about to cross the line to obstacle. Jane also must do something about her troubles in the relationship with her boyfriend caused by her constant engagement in the case.
